Gleaners Food Bank will be the primary recipient of a major Super Bowl fund-raiser, Taste of the NFL.

The event will be Feb. 4 at Gleaners’ headquarters and warehouse, 3737 Waldemere Ave. Last year in Dallas the event raised $1 million for hunger-relief charities in NFL cities, said Linda Bendt, spokeswoman for the Minneapolis-based organization. The chosen charity in the host city typically receives about 30 percent of the proceeds, she said.

Next year will be the first time Taste of the NFL has held its event inside a food bank, Bendt said.

“It’s a unique opportunity to welcome guests to our facility and allow them to learn more about hunger in our community and beyond,” Gleaners CEO Cindy Hubert said.

Tickets to the strolling food-and-wine tasting cost $600 per person, and that actually makes Taste of the NFL one of the more affordable Super Bowl events, Bendt said.

This year there will be about 40 stations manned by chefs from NFL cities. Greg Hardesty, owner of Recess, will represent Indianapolis.

Retired Colts coach Tony Dungy will serve as honorary chairman.

Taste of the NFL is an independent not-for-profit organization.
