TIPPECANOE COUNTY Purdue trustees approve capital spending, operating budgets

Purdue University’s trustees on April 11 approved a $1.04 billion capital improvement plan for the next 10 years and a $1.03 billion conceptual operating budget for the next academic year.

The capital plan includes nearly $100 million in renovations and additions to Mackey Arena, and $80 million to build and renovate life sciences facilities on the West Lafayette campus. Another $11 million will be spent to begin replacing laboratories in the mechanical engineering department.

Money will also be spent to expand student housing at Indiana University Purdue University Fort Wayne, build a parking garage, and renovate the library and classrooms in the university’s medical building.

The newly approved operating budget-which is up 4.7 percent system-wide from the prior year-includes a 4.5-percent tuition increase. In-state students will pay $7,750 for the 2008-2009 academic year, up $334.

The trustees also approved a 3.5-percent increase in merit pay.

Other board approvals created a new master’s degree program in forensic science at IUPUI and a bachelor’s degree program in secondary education at Purdue North Central.
