Colossal signs may welcome visitors

MADISON COUNTY-Anderson could become the city-of-the-enormous-sign. Most recently, the city zoning board approved plans for a 644-square-foot, Las Vegaslike electronic sign for the new Hoosier Park racino along Interstate 69. City officials believe the sign, which features a 16-foot video screen, will help draw the 50,000 people who are expected to visit the gambling facility each week. The racino, featuring 2,000 slot machines, opened this month adjacent to Hoosier Park’s horse track. The sign to promote it complies with Indiana Department of Transportation laws that regulate how often the video screen on a digital billboard can change, but the location of the sign required a zoning board approval. The city requires that signs be 50 feet from the road. It will be that far from I-69 but only 23 feet from an exit ramp. The sign will go up by the end of August. In April, Nestle Corp. said it was awaiting approval to hoist a 45-foot-tall replica of the Nesquik Bunny along Interstate 69 to ensure passing motorists know what’s happening in the Madison County city. The three-dimensional replica of the Nestlé bunny will be leaning against a 40-foot-tall glass of chocolate milk.
