IBJ received a national first-place prize for general excellence at the Society of American Business Editors and Writers annual conference on April 27 in Denver.
The newspaper won in the weekly publication category, which includes regional business journals of all circulation sizes. Judges wrote: “The Indianapolis Business Journal was a clear standout for its consistently excellent page one enterprise with depth and variety. The design had a good mix of illustrations and photos
to draw in readers.”
SABEW, a not-for-profit based at the University of Missouri in Columbia, launched the contest in 1995 to set standards for business journalism and recognize role models. Coordinating the judging were journalism school faculty as well as practicing writers and editors.
IBJ journalists also were honored at the Indiana chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists annual awards ceremony
on April 24 at the Indianapolis Marriott North.
The publication’s reporters and editors received eight statewide SPJ awards, including two first-place awards. The top prizes went to reporter Peter Schnitzler for a package of stories questioning the management of the Center Township Trustee’s Office (under 40,000 circulation category) and to Associate Editor Tawn Parent for personal column-writing (publications of all sizes).
