It’s been a long time since anyone at the Statehouse can remember an Indiana governor sporting a full beard.

In fact, you have to go all the way back to Albert Gallatin Porter, who served from 1881-1885, to find a governor who had a full beard in his portrait (which was painted by the renown Hoosier artist T.C. Steele). A few more recent governors had facial hair—goatees or mustaches—but no full beards, at least not in their portraits.

So when the time comes for Holcomb to have his portrait done, should he keep the beard? You tell us.

Gov. Eric Holcomb was clean shaven when he was reelected in November. But then he went into COVID quarantine and emerged in early December with a beard. The big question now: Should the governor sport a beard in his official portrait?

  1. If he keeps it, he needs a professional groomer to maintain it frequently. The curled waves during his union speech appeared and un-kept, un-groomed, and sloppy. As governor he needs to look a bit more distinguished and professional.

    1. Well my guess would be if he had it professionally groomed prior to his speech then people would complain that he had it done without a face mask which he touts as a requirement. It would be difficult to have a full beard professionally groomed with a mask. But I agree with you, if he keeps it, it needs to be properly maintained.
