Party of what now?
If Marion County Republicans want to be helpful, how about coming up with a candidate to run for mayor with a plan to reduce crime? How about giving Marion County voters two solid choices for the future as opposed to “Democrats bad”? Joe Hogsett might be awful. But he doesn’t have to be good when the alternative is …. nothing.
And if the problem is “not enough boots on the ground”, and if it turns out the state of Indiana is swimming in so much excess money that has Republicans drooling over a tax cut to splash all over their re-election materials, how come not one of these bills goes to permanently funding more police officers and more public safety officers?
Democrats really pulling a muscle to somehow spin this. Yes Joe, Pothole is bad, but he is simply reflecting the people who vote for him. Defund the police and canonize the criminals is the Democrat platform. Literally 5 stories up on WTHR right now about career criminals wreaking havoc in Indy. Democrats need to go back to sitting at the kids table in the basement. The adults will try to clean up your mess.
Who’s the Democrat spinning this? Are you going on again with the nonsense that everyone who doesn’t vote straight ticket Republican is a Democrat again?
The reality is that the only thing more impotent than the Indiana Democratic Party is the Marion County Republican Party, which got killed in the last election with the chair of the County GOP running as their mayoral candidate. Voting for Jim Merritt was impossible in the last election.
The next mayoral election is in less than two years. This city has had a Republican mayor as late as 2015. So spare me that Republicans can’t win in Marion County.
They just need to actually show up with a real platform and solid candidates and try to win the elections instead of just throwing up their hands and saying that “those people” won’t vote for us anyway because they’re children. Republicans aren’t going to have anyone left on the City County Council with that attitude, Chuck.
This issue goes far beyond metro Indianapolis. This issue is national and can be characterized as “the urban crime issue”. Voters and candidates of the metro Indianapolis district must look at urban areas nationwide and decide what list they want to land on, safest (lowest violent crime) like Cambridge-Framingham-Newton MA population 2,406,489, or Warren-Troy-Farmington Hills MI population 2,578,349 …, or most dangerous (highest violent crime) like San Fancisco-San Meteo-Redwood City CA population 1,648,122, or Detroit-Dearborn-Livonia MI population 1,749,343. They should peel back the onion on such areas and identify the policies that are in place, public safety budgets, demographics, etc. No surprise that the low violent crime areas tend to have higher incomes, lower unemployment, and lower poverty. Here in Indiana, the top safest cities, ranked in order, are Zionsville, Westfield, Carmel, Fishers, West Lafayette, Crown Point, Noblesville, Brownsburg, Greensfield, and Munster. Perhaps candidates and voters should look at what these cities are doing in terms of policies and budgets for public safety. Of course it is obvious that affluence helps to lower violent crime rates. And tough-on-crime law enforcement also helps a great deal. It’s just very out of style currently. Here’s a novel approach … take the violent criminals off the streets … and keep them off the streets. No bail and no parole for violent criminals. Purge the prisons of the non-violent criminals and there will be adequate room for the violent criminals … to stay in prison for life.
