Wilburn had a 231-vote lead of 12,477 to 12,246 over Republican Fred Glynn in unofficial voting totals, with some absentee ballots still left to count.
“We did it!” Wilburn tweeted. “Thank you to every single volunteer, donor, friend & family member who helped us win this grassroots campaign for Hoosiers by Hoosiers.”
The total for Wilburn included 11,095 votes in Hamilton County and 1,382 votes in Marion County, which reported results from all vote centers on Wednesday morning.
Glynn’s count had 11,538 votes in Hamilton County and 708 in Marion County.
“Basically what it comes down to is this is a swing district, and it just didn’t swing our way this time,” Glynn told IBJ.
The newly drawn House District 32 includes Hamilton County’s Clay and Delaware townships and extends south into Marion County.
Wilburn, an assistant professor in occupational therapy at IUPUI, told IBJ last month her major focus if elected would be to improve health care access and quality in Indiana.
She said her three priorities at the Statehouse would be public education, public health and public safety.
Glynn, a two-term Hamilton County councilor and a 2019 Carmel mayoral candidate, defeated challenger Suzie Jaworowski in an ultra-close May primary that was decided by fewer than a dozen votes and went into a recount.
He decided to not seek another term on the council after the House District 32 seat became available.
