As a subscriber you can listen to articles at work, in the car, or while you work out. Subscribe NowDelphi Corp. announced yesterday that 200 workers have been put out of work at its electronics and safety plant in Kokomo, the Kokomo Tribune reported.
Auto-parts maker Delphi, the city’s second-largest employer, told the newspaper that 120 workers have been laid off indefinitely while 80 have been terminated.
The company expects even more layoffs through July, as its biggest customer, General Motors Corp., prepares for a June 1 restructuring deadline while shutting down for nine weeks.
“With the change in the [auto] industry, [layoffs] have been ongoing for the past several years,” the company told the newspaper. “As we need to respond to our customers’ declining demands, we have to cut back when they don’t need as much of our products.”
In Kokomo, about 3,500 work for Delphi, which is based in Troy, Mich.
