WellPoint Inc. has signed a deal with cross-town company Arcadia Resources Inc., promising to use Arcadia’s DailyMed service for the Medicaid patients that WellPoint handles in five states.
The Indianapolis-based health insurer will launch the DailyMed program this month in Virginia, Indianapolis-based Arcadia said today in a press release.
Programs in Kansas, New York, South Carolina and California will launch later.
Arcadia already provides its DailyMed service to the Indiana Medicaid program. But Medicaid programs around the country also hire health insurers to help them administrate the government-funded health benefits.
DailyMed sorts a patient’s numerous medications and vitamins into packets labeled for the time of the day they are supposed to be taken. The company claims its service helps patients comply with their doctors’ instructions and avoid hospital visits caused by taking the wrong doses of medicines or taking them at the wrong times.
“Implementing the DailyMed medication-management program will complement and enhance our current programs dedicated to managing members with chronic conditions,” said Kevin Hayden, president of WellPoint’s state-sponsored business unit, in a statement.
Arcadia CEO Marvin Richardson said in a statement that the deal with WellPoint provides “validation” to his company’s reorganization around the DailyMed service.
“From a business standpoint, this agreement is a critical milestone in our plans to continue to develop DailyMed into our fastest-growing business segment and to become a leading provider of pharmaceutical services,” he said.
