Indiana University is seeing record levels of enrollment at its Bloomington campus.

The Bloomington Herald-Times said 43,213 students enrolled at IU's main campus this semester, an increase of 625 students from last year. IU released the figures Wednesday based on an official count conducted Monday.

School officials also say the campus is also more diverse this year. There are 7,792 minority students enrolled this year, up 525 students over last year. Minority students also make up a larger proportion of the total degree-seeking student body at about 18 percent this year, compared to about 17 percent last year.

The number of Asian students increased the most among the minority population, growing by nearly 200 students compared to last year.

The sum total of degree-seeking students — 97,273 — across all of IU's campuses is down 0.8 percent.

Elsewhere in Indiana, universities are seeing mixed results with their enrollment.

Indiana State University's overall count is 13,565, down 19 students from last year's 13,584. School officials say the freshman number, 2,448, reflects increased competition for a flat number of high school graduates in the state.

"We're all after the same market share," said John Beacon, ISU senior vice president for enrollment management, marketing and communications.

Meanwhile, Ball State University's new freshman class of 3,911 is the third-largest of all time. And at 21,998, total enrollment at Ball State is also up this year, the third-largest student body in 20 years.
