Indiana University won’t have its own highlighted day at next month’s Indiana State Fair, a sponsorship change estimated to save the school about $60,000.

The university sponsored a State Fair day for the past three years, with information booths, parades of cheerleaders and events such as last summer’s pep rally with new basketball coach Tom Crean.

IU paid $40,700 for last year’s sponsorship, but university spokeswoman Valerie Pena says other expenses raised the total cost to nearly $100,000.

Pena told The Bloomington Herald-Times that IU was spending $37,000 on fair activities, including a booth, free health testing and sponsorship of a daily shuttle.

Fair spokesman Andy Klotz said Purdue University and Ball State University are among 11 “day” sponsors for the Aug. 7-23 State Fair, which has been extended to 17 days this year.
