The former volunteer treasurer of an arts group that stages one of Indianapolis’ best-known art fairs has been charged with embezzling about $400,000.
Brandon Benker was charged yesterday with seven forgery counts and one count of theft. If found guilty, he could be sentenced to 10 years in prison.
Benker now lives in Tennessee. Last year, he controlled the accounts of the Penrod Society, which puts on the Penrod Arts Fair each September at the Indianapolis Museum of Art.
His attorney says the 28-year-old Benker had a gambling problem and spent most of the money in Las Vegas.
Benker is expected to surrender this week.
