An unidentified pilot explains the propulsion system of a Trans World Airlines airplane to Indianapolis Airport Authority officials, including, from left, Clarence Cornish, director of aeronautics; Fred W. Sommer, a member of the Indianapolis Board of Aviation Commissioners; Betty and Phil Rodgers; and another unidentified pilot. TWA started flying out of what was then the Indianapolis Municipal Airport in the early 1930s, shortly after the airline formed, until it was acquired in 2001 by American Airlines. Today, 10 airlines fly out of the Indianapolis International Airport, totaling an average of 145 daily departures to 51 non-stop destinations, including Paris. See a story on page 1 about the state’s efforts to expand the airport’s international flights.
