Daimler-Chrysler AG will eliminate 10,000 blue-collar jobs as part of a sweeping restructuring that will shrink Chrysler and integrate it more closely with its German parent, the Detroit News reports, citing unnamed sources familiar with the plan. Project X” aims to reverse losses that mounted to $1.2 billion for Chrysler last year.

However, it is unclear if the cuts would affect the 2,600 employed at two transmission plants the company operates in Kokomo north of Indianapolis.

Chrysler closed an engine block foundry on the Indianapolis southwest side in fall 2005, throwing 900 out of work. In 2003, the automaker sold its New Castle parts plant to Metaldyne Corp. of Plymouth, Mich.
