Katz Sapper & Miller
As an expert on taxes, John Estridge is recognized for his ability to solve complex matters and deliver innovative solutions for KSM’s real estate clients. He regularly gives presentations on qualified opportunity zones, federal historic preservation tax credits, Section 163(j) business interest expense limitations and other sections in the tax code that have a lot of parentheses. As a partner at KSM, he is a true champion of diversity. He led the development of the firm’s “Men as Allies” program, an initiative that uses tools from the Carmel-based Integrating Women Leaders Foundation to train men on how to better understand the devaluing behaviors women face in the workplace and how to advocate for women. In 2023, he was named the association’s “Ally of the Year,” though colleagues say he is quick to deflect attention from his own accomplishments. “No one exemplifies being an ally to women more genuinely and with such integrity, humility and unwavering commitment than John,” said Kim Graham Taff, the foundation’s former CEO.
Getting here: He initially set out to be a financial adviser, working for Financial Partners Group and PNC Bank, but he learned that job was not his passion. While he was earning his master’s degree in accounting, an adviser, Susan Cauble, recommended an internship at KSM.
First job: Cleaner of horse stalls. “Throughout my career in public accounting, I have frequently described myself as a ‘glutton for punishment,’ and as I reflect back on this first job, it may have been what set me on that path. That, or it subconsciously motivated me to seek the creature comforts of an office job.”
Givebacks: volunteer with Meals on Wheels of Central Indiana, member of the operations and finance committee of the MLK Center, volunteer youth sports coach with Carmel Dads’ Club
Influential person: Kent Manuel, a partner with KSM who recently retired. “Unbelievably smart and amazingly humble, Kent is still my most valued mentor, who graciously serves as a sounding board on any topic, and … I would undoubtedly not be where I am today if it weren’t for him.”•
