Manager, Underground Engineering & Construction
Citizens Energy Group

Olivia Hawbaker VanDuyn manages capital planning for water distribution and wastewater collection for Citizens Energy Group. Her role includes overseeing master planning for capital needs over the next 20-plus years, program planning for risk-based project prioritization, and planning for individual projects. She also manages the system renewal program for sanitary sewer and manhole rehabilitation and emergency repairs, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and coordinating with federal and state agencies. “I love problem-solving in the engineering space, and I love finding solutions to our infrastructure needs that best serve and help our community continue to flourish,” she said. VanDuyn also is credited with developing the Empower program to support early career professionals in Citizens and launching the Ten Thousand Trees Program to plant 10,000 trees across the city to beautify neighborhoods and reduce sewer overflows to area waterways. VanDuyn was a member of the Stanley K. Lacy Executive Leadership Series Class 43.

Getting here: VanDuyn was working for a large civil engineering consulting firm in Buffalo, New York, designing improvements to stormwater and wastewater systems. She moved to Indianapolis because she was looking for a change in the kind of work she was doing. A former Purdue classmate who worked for Citizens introduced her to the company, “and I aligned so well with the mission and work of the organization that I moved back to Indiana.”

First job: An “explainer” at the Corning Museum of Glass, giving tours to groups and sharing information about collections and pieces in the museum.

Givebacks: board member, Coburn Place Safe Haven, Girl Scouts of Central Indiana, Yvonne Perkins Legacy Fund and Common Ground Christian Church

Lesson learned: “I’ve slowly learned the importance of rest. For me, rest means recognizing what’s important, both in work and outside of work, and honoring both by creating time for both. It gives me time to center and focus.”•
