Carmel lauded for wastewater purification leadership

Carmel’s wastewater treatment process is so innovative that it’s been judged a “best practice.” The Washington, D.C.-based National League of Cities maintains a database of best practices for its 18,000 members.

In October 2005, Carmel opened the nation’s first municipal BioPasteur system to process solid biological waste, or sludge, from municipal wastewater. As a byproduct, the purification process produces biosolids that can be blended with soil to form topsoil for farming. This month, the National League of cities added Carmel’s wastewater process to its “best practices” database.

Before it installed the purification system, Carmel had to transport its biosolids to landfills up to 40 miles away. The new process is expected to save Carmel $200,000 annually in fuel, labor, equipment maintenance and permitting costs.
