This shows what a sham the bowl games have become. They need teams with losing records to play because there are so many of them. The former prestige of making it to a bowl game has cetainly diminished with the commercialization of college football.
I agree with Thomas H. 100%. I tend not to watch any bowl games because I don’t know what they are playing for anymore (National Championship, regional championship, local potato chip championships, who knows?)
Wait until the NIL “Stars” start opting out of the Non-Playoff Bowl Games – Teams will be playing the 3rd string just to put a team on the filed. Who wants to get a serious injury in the Banana Bowl?
The playoffs don’t even count anymore when you have two teams in the playoffs that are there as their participation trophies. A 20.5 pt. dog in the playtoffs?
Bowl games are dying. The College Playoffs will (appropriately) continue to expand. High Schools in have playoffs with more than 12 teams…This year’s CFP selection controversies will only hasten the expansion of the playoffs. Bowls will be scrapped, with the possible exception of the top handful of bowl venues.
I support the expansion of the CFP. Let’s take it to 32 teams asap – no first round byes for anyone, and have the higher seeded team host all games except the Finals (at a minimum, the higher seed should host all but the Semi’s and Finals). Then we’ll see how the warm weather teams do when they have to go to Michigan, or Indiana, or Pennsylvania, or Minnesota, or any northern locale in January…
Let’s go back to the Bowl system. At least then we had real conferences, the champions and didn’t discuss 2 or 3 win teams playing for a national championship.
