Great article. My wife and I talk about this everyday. And it’s not only airports that are gouging us. It’s everywhere. Went to Wendy’s for lunch yesterday and paid $23 for two hamburgers, fries, and cokes. Went for a steak dinner with friends last month and a meal that would have typically cost us $100-ish, cost us over $200. Bags of dog treats we used to buy on Chewy for $7.99 are now $18.99. It’s horrible.
The beauty of America is that we can just not pay the inflated prices and vote with our feet.
I have started saying no. A McDonald’s meal that was over $10 was my eye opener. I rarely eat there now. At the airports I have started bringing an empty container to fill up with free water once I get through security. That has saved a bundle and now I just need to plan the eating part better. If people start saying no, prices will come down right?
“If people start saying no, prices will come down right?”
Wrong. Restaurants will close if they can’t cover costs.
And…using the Minneapolis Fed online inflation calculator, your QPC+large fries+Coke that cost $3.25 in the early 1980s would cost $9.99 today. So there you have it: the $10 Mickey D’s dinner. If you want to eat cheaper, get the McDouble and small fries. 5 bucks.
