No external audit in 13 years?
How about it! Maybe someone should have wondered how she afforded a month long vacation every year. And who was keeping the books for an entire month year after year without noticing?
This exact thing happened to my church (another Catholic parish) back in the early 1990s–arrest was made in the fall of 1992. About the same amount of money was determined to have been stolen. At the time, the Archdiocese realized how little oversight there was in these situations, and said it was going to implement outside audits of parishes on a regular basis. I don’t know what happened to that. Our thief got a ten-year sentence, but seven years were suspended. At the time, Indiana gave prisoners one day off for every day of “good behavior,” so he was out in 18 months. I thought he got off much too lightly.
