Unfortunately, I cannot abide by what I am considering poor journalism. The fact that legislators travel is a fact and mere pennies in the overall state budget. In fact, probably wouldn’t even be considered pennies. I have to attend conferences for a variety of things, and the cost per trip being documented is sometimes the same, or less, than what you are reporting here.
I find it interesting that this is a “d*mned if you do, d*amned if you don’t” scenario. If they didn’t go, they would be slammed for not educating themselves on change. If they do go, they get slammed for spending money. I get tired of this type of journalistic baiting.
Do I agree with every event they attend? No I do not. But if they didn’t go, they wouldn’t be able to see others perspectives. Do I agree with gift giving? No I do not. But, the fact remains, if one doesn’t see all perspectives, it then puts them into position to make more decisions in a vacuum. So it appears someone doesn’t like the events they attend. Okay, who is going to start saying who can go and what they can go to? Is there a police officer for that? Hey, let’s spend money on staff to oversee travel, event approval and overall expenditures on a trip (yes, this is called sarcasm).
I am tired of politics, I am tired of Indiana staying closed-minded, I am tired of a lot of things, but I am NOT going to begrudge any leader for going out to learn. This is a two-way street. If you expect the leaders of this state to have progressive ideas, they need to see it all…no matter what side of the aisle they sit on.
