Cue the Liberal wailing
It’s not as if any of us are surprised by this. It’s disappointing, but it happens in almost every state with a Democratic or Republican supermajority. That should disappoint everyone who’s an American citizen. There should be a federal law that makes redistricting non-partisan.
They should also expand the House like they used to until 1913 based on population growth. Of course, that won’t happen because the Republicans would never control the House again.
Wesley, I agree on trying to make it non-partisan, but how is that possible in today’s environment? Both sides feel like they have to dominate the other to get anything done because their is no such thing as middle ground or compromise anymore. At all levels of government it’s a war for control. Just look at how most things are always passed along party lines. I’d like to see both parties scraped and we have to start over with something that takes us back to the center. You can’t have a successful country that is always divided in half with one side getting it’s way over the other. Is their such a thing as non-partisan today?
I’m surprised by the comment by Carol Rogers. The bulk of the City of Indianapolis population is already in one district (Carson’s) and the surrounding counties are already divided into 4 other districts, which isn’t the norm. The Indy suburbs were divided between 2 and 3 districts for at least 40 years until 2011. Dividing into 4 districts was purposely done by the Republicans to spread Republican-leaning, suburban Indy voters to as many districts as possible. There are non-partisan or bi-partisan ways to establish districts but that’s unlikely from this group of Republicans in the Statehouse.
