3 thoughts on “Indiana Senate committee turns four local tax bills into one

  1. I think it’s crazy that Indiana is still planning on tax cuts. The millions in Federal funding that has disappeared and is still being cut at the Federal level is not frivolous spending. Hoosiers are going to suffer as services are cut.

For just one example, with cut in Federal Library dollars already happening we are going to see cuts in Library services across the state, especially in the rural areas.

I just have to assume Republicans State lawmakers are just stupid to think that their constituents won’t notice. It’s getting harder and harder to blame “Biden and the libs”.

    1. Dan, I agree with you. Libraries might be a bad example though because they are already a taxing authority line item on our property tax bills and the GOP mentality is to force the state spending cuts so that locals have to choose to raise their own taxes and not state tax dollars. But the state has to allow the tax levies of each county municipality to be raised or none of the local taxing authorities will ever be able to have the option to raise their own taxes either. Legislators are so focused only on their side of the equation but forget that it’s a much larger algebraic formula that if you cut on one side then you have to allow the other side to adjust…and they just aren’t doing this in proposed legislation. Not even sure most of our legislators have even taken an algebra or finance class before. It’s sad.

  2. It’s not sad…it’s not ignorance…its calculated.

If State Legislators (okay , be honest, the Republicans) deliver on lowering taxes, those tax cuts will come mainly from local property taxes. State Income taxes are less a target than local property taxes…though businesses are slobbering over the prospect of more reductions in state business taxes…

If localities are allowed to then increase their local taxes (property and local income) they will undo the heroic work of the state legislature and Braunwith to lower taxes. So, libraries, schools, law enforcement, fire, health facilities, infrastructure generally, will fall victim and the state has no intention of allowing local government to replace those funds in any meaningful way. Local government is just going to have to learn to do more with less, even though there is so much less there won’t be room to do more.

Legislators and the MAGAts working for Braunwith really need to read Professor Hicks from Ball State. Their short term “get me re-elected” efforts will bankrupt Indiana.
