A local motorsports team plans to spend $5 million to revamp a former Marsh Supermarket in Brownsburg into its new headquarters.

HMD Motorsports, which competes in the NTT IndyCar Series and Indy NXT by Firestone series (formerly Indy Lights), bought the grocery store at 843 E. Main St. in November for $3.5 million. It said Tuesday it plans to renovate and occupy the entire 65,000-square-foot building, which has been vacant since 2017.

Renovations to the building are already underway, with HMD expected to move into the facility sometime in the summer.

The motorsports team, an affiliate of Chicago-based freighter HMD Trucking, has been competing in open wheel racing events since it was founded in 2017. It currently employs 22 people and expects to add another 13 employees over the next five years, according to a spokesperson for the town of Brownsburg.

HMD will receive a five-year vacant building deduction from Brownsburg. The deduction is a stair-stepped tax abatement on the real property, where total tax liability increases by about 20% each year. The company last year received approval from the Brownsburg Advisory Plan Commission to rezone the 9.6-acre property from a commercial to a motor sports designation.

HMD partnered with Illinois-based Dale Coyne Racing to field David Malukas—the son of owner Henry Malukas—in the 2022 IndyCar series. Linus Lundqvist, one of six racers fielded by the team last year, won the driver championship in the NXT series in 2022, while HMD won the team championship the previous year.

“We love the Town of Brownsburg as there are a ton of motorsports-related businesses and vendors in the area,” HMD General Manager Mike Maurini said in written comments. “While the buildout is in progress, we are excited to move into our new headquarters and look forward to what the future holds for HMD Motorsports.”

HMD plans to have nine drivers in the NXT series in 2023 and again partner with Dale Coyne Racing on David Malukas’ entry in the IndyCar series.

“Brownsburg continues to thrive as the heartbeat of the racing community,” Brownsburg Town Council President Travis Tschaenn said a statement. “HMD Motorsports’ commitment to growth and investment in our community will bring new, exciting employment opportunities and establish Brownsburg as a premier destination for the motorsports industry.”

  1. I’m glad it won’t be vacant anymore and happy to have a race team in town, but I don’t understand this combination at all. There are so many warehouse spaces the headquarters could go in within a mile of this location. This is a retail space with a huge parking lot and outlots that could really benefit from a strong anchor. Even with 35 employees this parking lot is going to look empty. This seems like a missed opportunity to continue the search for a strong retail tenant or divide into smaller retail spaces. Maybe there are plans to develop part of the parking lot to fit a small strip center?

  2. I’m glad when any of the abandoned Marsh locations gains a new tenant, but it’s sad a vacant Marsh at Lynhurst and Rockville Rd just south of Speedway and much nearer to the track wasn’t the one selected.
