“There has been a lot of changes on our board,” Lennen, 50, said in an interview with IBJ. “I was uncomfortable. I don’t think we were in sync the way we used to be.”
Lennen, who led the Shelbyville hospital for 15 years, said the board supported his interest in economic development and Intelliplex, the state-certified technology park that the hospital was instrumental in creating on Interstate 74 in 2003.
He would not discuss whether he had been asked to resign, nor would he divulge other details of his departure.
Lennen said he also was experiencing a certain level of burnout.
Hospitals operate around the clock, he noted. As a result, he often showed up during evenings and weekends, even once during Christmas. “Leadership shouldn’t be walking out of there on Friday night,” he said.
Trust and mutual respect between himself and physicians built during his tenure is his greatest accomplishment at the hospital, Lennen said. The orthopedic doctors he attracted in recent months wouldn’t have come had he not built the relationships, he said.
Major Hospital revenue increased fivefold in his 15 years.
Lennen said he’s interested in moving into a life sciences position in the Indianapolis area, either in a university or business setting. He said he will play up his combination of financial acumen and ability to form relationships with colleagues.
