Interactive Intelligence Inc. rang up $1.6 million in profit in the third quarter, bouncing back from a $445,000 loss in the same period of 2012, the company reported Tuesday after markets closed.

The Indianapolis-based company, which develops software for call centers, continued to pick up more big sales as it focused more on cloud-based services.

Interactive reported $78 million in third-quarter revenue, up 32 percent from 2012.

The company signed 47 contracts worth more than $250,000 and 12 worth at least $1 million. That is up from 37 and nine, respectively, a year earlier.

Profit plunged in 2012 because Interactive spent heavily in areas such as research and development as it revamped its business model.

Rather than setting up on-site contact centers and collecting upfront payments, the company has focused more on putting those services on the cloud and charging subscriptions. Revenue trickles in more slowly under the new model.

Wall Street has generally approved of the company’s changes, despite the profit slump it experienced in 2012.

Interactive shares closed Tuesday at $57.80, up 68 percent from the start of the year.
