Subscribe NowIndiana University received $461.8 million in private individual and institutional gifts in fiscal year 2017, the IU Foundation announced Aug. 11. That includes more than $168 million in non-governmental grants and more than $293 million in private philanthropy, including contributions from individuals, businesses and foundations.
The donations mark the fourth consecutive year giving has exceeded the goals IU set in its bicentennial funding campaign. It’s also the third consecutive year philanthropic support has exceeded $400 million.
The vast majority of donors specify how they would like to have their gifts used. The foundation announced that, in fiscal 2017, donors chose to fund initiatives related to academic programs, student scholarships and financial aid, faculty support and research, and facilities.
“The IU Foundation is devoted to helping the university honor its past and help provide the support that will create opportunities for generations to come,” the group’s president, Dan Smith, said in a statement. “We are fortunate to have so many friends who support our mission. Their kindness and generosity will have a vast impact on the citizens in our great state and beyond.”
As of the end of fiscal 2017, the bicentennial campaign is two-thirds of the way to completion. It’s set to end December 2019 to coincide with IU’s 2020 bicentennial celebration.•
