A study released this week projects $66 billion changing hands among generations in Indiana over the next 10 years.

If 5 percent of the amount were donated to charity, the resulting $164 million a year in income could be made available to communities, according to the study sponsor, the Indiana Grantmakers Council. Other findings include:

-Indiana’s estimated $310 billion in net worth amounts to $125,080 per household. That’s less than the U.S. average of $144,112.

-Though Indiana’s slower population and economic growth will suppress the total amount of wealth destined to be transferred, the state will create new wealth faster than “historic” wealth is dispersed, even after adjusting for inflation.

-Suburbs, areas with high amenities and second homes, and regions with high growth are creating wealth faster than core city neighborhoods and rural areas. Still, the study said, opportunities exist for wealth transfer even in poorer areas.
