Two high-level managers at the new Conrad Indianapolis hotel downtown have resigned effective at the end of the month, the hotel said today.

The hotel said today General Manager Jan Chovanec will leave at the end of this month to move closer to his family. Director of Sales and Marketing David Catalon has taken a sales position at a Boston company.

The hotel company said Chovanec wanted to be closer to family and Catalon was recruited by his new employer; neither was asked to resign.

"The resignations are in no way linked to performance," said spokesman Robert Allegrini.

The hotel also is on a trend to meet goals for the first quarter of 2007, Allegrini said.

IBJ reported Dec. 18 that the occupancy rate in the hotel’s first nine months averaged 50 percent, less than the 65-percent average for downtown hotels.

Officials at other downtown hotels told IBJ at the time that the Conrad had cut rates from the $279 a night the hotel charged when it opened. A check in mid-December showed the Conrad was charging about $229.

However, luxury hotels like the Conrad—the city’s first with a five-star rating—sometimes need a year or two to become established, said Mark Eble, a hotel consultant and regional vice president for Philadelphia-based PKF Consulting.
