A Virginia company says it has temporarily withdrawn its ambitious plans to build a hospital and hotel complex east of Brownsburg.

Joe Cross, the construction manager for Metropolitan Medical Care Inc., confirmed today that the company has temporarily withdrawn its request for zoning approval from the Hendricks County Planning Commission, but that it intends the withdrawal to last only 30 days.

Cross does development work for Metropolitan Medical, which is trying to buy 83 acres from the Clermont Golf Course along Interstate 74. Last week, Metropolitan Medical’s president, Dr. David T. Schwartz, said he had yet to come to an agreement with the golf course to buy the land.

Schwartz envisions a 20-bed hospital, a hotel with as many as 175 rooms, as well as health-related office buildings on the site. He wanted to draw traffic from fast-growing Hendricks County and, via the soon-to-come Ronald Reagan parkway, from the entire Indianapolis metro area.

Schwartz, a former urologist, has a checkered medical past, according to articles in the Washington Post. In 2000, the Post reported that Schwartz had been sued seven times for medical malpractice. And in 1982, he was ordered to spend six months in prison for tax evasion.
