A research center to be included in the Medco Health Solutions Inc. pharmacy distribution center at Whitestown will study drug data, genetic testing and medical claims data, the company said today.

With help from colleges and universities, the center will look for ways to use the information to cut costs and improve patient health, said Medco, which is headquartered in Franklin Lakes, N.J.

Medco earlier said the close proximity of pharmacy schools at Purdue and Butler universities played a role in its decision to choose Indianapolis over other sites.

It was not immediately clear if the center will create jobs beyond the 1,300 that Medco discussed in December when it announced it had chosen Boone County over Johnson and Hendricks counties for the $140 million project.

Today’s announcement came during a groundbreaking at the site in the AllPoints at Anson mixed-use development.

The warehouse operation is expected to dispense as many as 1 million prescriptions a week.
