Growth at Roche Diagnostics will push across 96th Street and take over the Marsh Supermarkets headquarters building, Roche announced today.

By the end of 2010, Roche will transfer roughly 340 jobs to the new location from its campus in the northeast corner of Marion County, which serves as the company’s North American headquarters. Swiss-based Roche, which makes pharmaceuticals and medical diagnostic equipment, employs 2,800 in Indianapolis.

Meanwhile, Roche expects its Indianapolis workforce to grow at about 4 percent a year, mostly in sales and marketing.

“We were busting at the seams,” said Roche spokeswoman Doyia Turner.

The town of Fishers has promised to grant $277,000 over 10 years in property tax abatements to help Roche make $2 million in improvements to the Marsh building and install $2.75 million in computer equipment.

If Roche makes those investments, the town of Fishers would see an extra $283,000 in tax revenue in the next 10 years, Booth said.

“The Fishers Town Council couldn’t be happier that another excellent corporate citizen will occupy the building that serves as a focal point at the entryway of our community,” said Fishers Town Council President Scott Faultless.

Roche will sublease the 148,000-square-foot building, which served as the headquarters of the Marsh grocery chain since 1991.

Turner said that mostly marketing personnel would be concentrated in the Marsh facility.

Marsh will now have to find a new headquarters location. The grocery chain was acquired in September 2006 by a Florida-based private equity firm, Sun Capital Partners Inc., for $88 million in cash.

Some Marsh staff members will remain in the building until Jan. 1, 2009, when the company plans to fully vacate its Fishers headquarters, said Marsh spokeswoman Connie Gardner. Marsh already has relocated some of its employees to new offices at the company’s facility on Franklin Road and Washington Street in Indianapolis, and has moved about 20 employees to its former headquarters in Yorktown.
