Zach Adamson was among the Democratic city-county councilors defeated in the primary.

Three Democratic incumbents on the Indianapolis City-County Council, including council vice president Zach Adamson, were defeated Tuesday night in their bid for the party’s nomination.

Adamson was defeated by Jesse Brown by nearly 12 percentage points, according to a preliminary tally with all Marion County vote centers reporting. Brown, a self-described Democratic socialist, is a former Democratic Party state convention delegate and a current precinct committee person, according to his website.

Monroe Gray, who has served on the council for 30 years, also was toppled. He had 33% of the vote to Brienne Delaney’s 67%. Delaney’s career includes eight years as Marion County’s director of elections and four years as a deputy prosecutor.

Councilor David Ray fell to Andy Nielsen by nearly 15 percentage points. Nielsen is a policy analyst with Indiana Community Action Poverty Institute

Democratic Councilor Kristin Jones also was in a tight race but topped challenger Matt Impink by 4 percentage points.

In the battle for open seats on the council, Carlos Perkins won a three-way race for the Democratic nomination in District 6, netting 55% of the vote. He ran against precinct committeewoman Rosemary Turentine and attorney Maurice Scott in the newly-drawn majority Black district that includes portions of Pike and Washington townships.

In District 8, another open seat encompassing the State Fairgrounds and much of the city along Fall Creek, Democrat Ron Gibson had 56% of the vote to Danita Hoskin’s 44%.

Vote totals are not final until May 12 when provisional and military ballots have been counted.

  1. Nice to see a little touch of democracy making the comfortable incumbents a little less comfortable. Good to see Zach Adamson gone.

    1. Don’t worry, Aaron F, Republicans like Aaron Freeman are more than willing to override local rule when it’s convenient.

Maybe if the Marion County Republican Party wasn’t a clown show they’d win elections against goofball Democrats.

    1. If you had evidence of corruption, why wouldn’t you present it? Otherwise this is just a smear, and your unsupported allegation reflects mainly on you.

    2. It’s not fair to criticize Aaron Freeman for corruption if you can’t produce evidence.

It’s totally fair to call him astronomically dumb because he continues to not deliver the road funding that Indianapolis needs while fighting the best option for fixing large chunks of Indianapolis’ roads, mass transit and bus lanes.

Freeman would rather have two lanes filled with potholes than one lane paved by the federal government and one lane dedicated to buses.

He’s all for local control until it’s stupid. That’s the kind of thing you say when you know you’d get a Jim Merritt style drubbing if you ran for mayor because you’re a caricature of a politician, and you couldn’t carry a paper clip compared to Lugar, Hudnut, or Daniels.

    3. Why resort to lies and unfounded speculation when the public record of incompetence does the job just as well?

  2. Hey Richard S., do a little digging into the numerous campaign contributions coming from Ray Skillman, himself, and in the names of a multitude of other Ray Skillman employees. It’s pretty easy to connect the dots between these contributions and Mr. Freeman’s never ending battle against IndyGo and, more recently, his bizarre reasoning against the proposal to limit “rights on red” in downtown Indy. Also, the man is a petulant child and I’m not sure he has a sufficient level of intelligence required to represent anyone as a public official.
