And there are some public officeholders who ascend to power without even appearing on a ballot.
To wit, an incumbent state legislator that resigns and is replaced by a new legislator hand-picked by the party that held the seat. What better way to say “voters not needed” so that a political party can have a closed, one-side decision reached to fill vacancies and remain in power.
This, as well as gerrymandering, slack ethical standards, and a focus on issues that are not “front-burner” for most citizens have contributed to the cynicism that a majority of eligible voters in Indiana has. Political power, it seems, is more important here than participation in our democracy.
Hmmm…. If we got rid of gerrymandered districts and made more of them competitive, maybe we would get more voter interest and more voter turnout.
Who cares to vote when you have one of seven bad choices that all look the same in a district so red or blue that who ever wins the primary only has to play to the hardline base to make it to a sure win in the fall.
