Strike hurts state job numbers in April

May 19, 2008

The strike at Detroit-based American Axle and Manufacturing Holdings Inc. was a drag on Indiana employment in April, according to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development. Overall employment of 2.98 million was down 3,100 from March but up slightly from a year earlier, the agency reported late last week. The agency estimates that the 12-week-old […]

May 19, 2008

Planners and politicians spent the better part of a decade and untold millions of dollars studying a mass transit system between
downtown and the suburbs. They have little to show for it except mounds of reports and an estimate of $690 million, but the
boys in bib overalls at the Indiana Transportation Museum think they can get it done for much less.

Soaring cost of gas makes ethanol blend more competitive

April 28, 2008

Prices of an alternative fuel that’s had patriotic and environmental appeal–but not an economic one for motorists–have been
flirting this month with gasoline on an energy-equivalent cost basis. The sudden but often fleeting price appeal of fuel “E85,”
a blend of ethanol with a dash of gasoline, is due largely to gas prices soaring to nearly $4 a gallon.

VIEWPOINT: Get on board with transit, or miss the bus

March 31, 2008

The Crossroads of America is at a crossroads-a transportation crossroads. And the direction we choose will affect our area’s competitiveness and economy for decades. It’s imperative that we embrace mass transit. Mass transit matters because it correlates to a key concern for companies planning to move or expand: access to a qualified work force. In choosing a community, companies assess obvious factors such as site acquisition costs and taxation, but even those typically take a back seat to work-force access….

Real-world experience-for real: IUPUI’s Global Design Studio lets students tackle projects around the planet

March 31, 2008

New Orleans and Indonesia are worlds apart, yet linked by devastation from catastrophic floodwaters and by the outpouring of empathy that has ensued. An effort launched four years ago on the campus of IUPUI to involve design students in actual construction projects is responsible for a portion of the good will. The Global Design Studio is helping to rebuild areas ravaged by Hurricane Katrina and, to a lesser extent, the tsunami. Its projects also include renovating a boarding house in…

NOTIONS: Beyond the biased barriers of Beaver Cleaverville

March 24, 2008

I grew up on the outskirts of Omaha, Neb.; Lafayette and Fort Wayne. Each time we moved, we wound up near the line where the suburbs met the farm fields. For a kid, this had advantages. You could ride your bike down miles of country roads, hike through newly plowed furrows or climb through construction sites after the Amish workers had called it a day. Mostly, you watched one world advance and the other retreat. The houses in our neighborhoods…

What does Cincinnati have that Indianapolis doesn’t? As of today, an IKEA. Instead, IKEA chose to add locations in Bloomington, Minn., near […]

Businesses eager for canal to be a ‘selling point’ again: Water should be back – and sparkling – soon

March 10, 2008

For nearly five months, leasing agents at Canal Overlook Apartments have relied on photos and visual aids to show potential renters what a perk a canal view can be. If the would-be renters take a gander now, all they get is a view of a drained Central Canal and workers scraping out decades worth of slime. “It is usually a selling point, but [the cleanup] has been long and it smells bad,” said Lynn Grine, leasing manager for the 125-unit…
