November 19, 2007

One of New York’s premiere poster designers is featured in a solo show at the Dean Johnson Gallery, while one of the most popular stand-up comics in the country stops at Conseco Fieldhouse. Last week I wanted to tell you about the Paula Scher show at Dean Johnson Gallery. Alas, space was short and there wouldn’t have been room to show you any of the work. Where’s the fun in that? Now, with more space, we can show you some…

Beware stock investors: Credit problems remain INVESTING:

October 22, 2007

Seemingly unbeknownst to the stock market, problems continue to lurk in the credit markets. Regulators are concerned about the market upheaval caused by structured investment vehicles. Large banks set up SIVs as off-balance-sheet investments to leverage their investment capital and earn higher returns. There are reportedly some 30 SIVs with $400 billion in assets. SIVs employ a simple strategy to make money: They borrow short term (at low rates) and invest in longer-term securities (at higher rates), thereby earning the…

A&E: Beckmann benefits while McLaughlin comes home

October 22, 2007

The Beckmann Theatre has an impressive board, a unique mission and, judging from the benefit performance staged Oct. 15 at the American Cabaret Theatre, the goodwill of a strong talent pool. What it could use are some actual theatrical productions. Launching in 2002 and carrying the name of Bob Beckmann, the late arts and civic leader who helped transform downtown, the Beckmann Theatre has offered about a show a year, plus a handful of readings, since its inception. The company’s…

NOTIONS: Learning while teaching the college freshmen

October 22, 2007

I spent two days last week in Bloomington, visiting my alma mater. I walked tree-lined paths I walked 30 years ago, spoke from the front of an auditorium where I once faded into the middle-row masses, grabbed pizza for dinner with some journalism students and their professor. In my lectures, I told the undergrads how I got from there to here. How, at their age, I had no idea what I wanted to be when I grew up. How a…

Mental health parity gets closer to reality: Bill requires equal coverage in health insurance

October 8, 2007

Local mental health advocates are applauding a U.S. Senate bill passed last month that would require equal health insurance coverage for mental and physical ailments when policies cover both. The bill, which passed unanimously, moves advocates one step closer in their long-fought quest for a concept known as mental health parity. Mental Health America, formerly known as the National Mental Health Association, praised the passage as an opportunity to end discrimination against people with mental health disorders. Steve McCaffrey, president…

NOTIONS: Of saints, poets and the randomness of life

October 8, 2007

Last weekend, my wife Cherí and I visited my son, Austin, and his girlfriend, Karolina, in New York City, where they’re first-year students at New York University. Whenever I land at LaGuardia, catch a cab into the city, ride the subway, shop on Fifth Avenue, or meld with the masses at Times Square, the iPod in my brain advances through Stephen Sondheim’s “Company” to a song called “Another Hundred People.” Amid the horns, sirens and white noise, I hear: Another…

expenses–has elicited mixed response.

Township wrestles with incorporation: As Greenwood, Bargersville annex commercial corridors, rest of township declines

September 17, 2007

White River Township in northwest Johnson County is dotted with an increasing number of high-priced homes and anchored by one of the area’s strongest school districts. But the area, known as Center Grove, also is marked by crumbling roads, poor drainage and an anemic parks system. To preserve its strengths and shore up its growing weaknesses, some in the area think White River Township needs to incorporate into its own city. The township of more than 40,000 residents faces the…

Ad agency scores national attention with MTV campaign: Bradley and Montgomery use Web’s social networks

September 10, 2007

Advertising agency Bradley and Montgomery launched an unorthodox campaign for cable television station MTV last month that is gaining the local firm-and its client-national acclaim. A friend of a friend led BAM officials to the New York-based music television channel, which was looking to promote the release of its show “The Hills” on DVD. BAM officials pulled video snippets from the show, enhanced them graphically, then uploaded the snippets to Web sites such as YouTube.comand Veoh.com. The resulting vignettes can…

With the 200th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birth approaching, Indiana, Illinois and Kentucky all are fighting for
a share of the bicentennial limelight. Each has a valid claim to the 16th president: Lincoln was born in Hodgenville, Ky.,
on April 12, 1809, moved to a southern
Indiana farm with his family at age 7, then moved to Illinois at 21.
