NOTIONS: Piddling and diddling en route to doomsday

July 14, 2008

On July 4, my college-aged sons came to visit. We grabbed a late lunch, talked for a while, and sat down in the family room to await the big party in the neighborhood courtyard. Austin and Zach got out their laptops and started browsing. I turned on the TV and started surfing. I landed on HBO’s production of “John Adams.” As we watched, the Continental Congress was in session in 1775 and 1776. The delegates-during and between meetings-were arguing various…

Smaller jets take toll on Republic Airways: Half of fleet out of favor with big airline customers

July 21, 2008

It’s not just the beat-up airline industry that’s troubling locally based Republic Airways Holdings, it’s the aircraft itself. About half the regional jets flown by Republic for major airlines are of a type quickly falling into disfavor with the majors as they buckle under high fuel prices. About 118 of Republic’s 226 aircraft have fewer than 50 seats-too few passengers over which to spread the higher cost of jet fuel to make many of the routes they fly profitable. That’s…

Republic speeds elimination of small jets

July 30, 2008

By Norm Heikens Republic Airways Holdings, the Indianapolis-based parent of Chautauqua Airlines, Republic Airlines and Shuttle America, said yesterday it will accelerate its schedule to do away with a small, 37-seat jet used to carry passengers for Delta Air Lines. The 11 remaining Embraer E135 aircraft will be removed from service by Sept. 30 instead […]

Friedman’s influence on Indy

July 30, 2008

As fans of the late Milton Friedman gather at the Conrad Hotel tomorrow night to celebrate the libertarian
economist, theyâ??ll have plenty to crow about.

Ironically, though, Friedmanâ??s ideas about turning education over to market forces have failed to gain much…

Budget cuts loom for arts, parks as mayor tries to lessen deficit

August 4, 2008

After Mayor Greg Ballard’s upset victory at the polls last November, local arts leaders were in a panic. They worried the
no-nonsense former Marine would put public safety on a pedestal and slash Indianapolis’ funding for cultural groups.

Republic Airways profit leaps

August 7, 2008

Second-quarter net profit soared 49.3 percent for Republic Airways Inc., the Indianapolis-based carrier said late yesterday. Republic’s $28.4 million in profit was bolstered by a one-time gain of $6 million resulting from an interest-rate swap. Without the swap, Republic still turned a profit of $22.4 million, up nearly 18 percent from the same quarter last […]

Fuel prices driving layoffs, closings

August 11, 2008

Nearly half the layoff and closing notices registered with the Indiana Department of Workforce Development this year have involved car and truck parts manufacturers, companies making mobile homes and recreational vehicles, and businesses involved in air service. The common thread across the industries is rising fuel prices, according to The Times of Munster. More than […]

Cummins looked outside state for office project

August 14, 2008

The 500-employee office complex Cummins Inc. is building near its headquarters in downtown Columbus might have ended up in another state had the city not offered to pay for a new parking garage. The claim came Tuesday during Mayor Fred Armstrong’s mid-year State of the City report, according to The Republic of Columbus. Armstrong’s remarks […]

World-class challenge

August 16, 2008

From 1979 to 1982, IUPUI inherited three world-class athletic facilities that have since hosted Olympic trials and world-record performances by top-flight amateur and professional athletes. But that inheritance has turned into a financial albatross around the university’s neck. It’s grappling with how to pay for their upkeep and the improvements necessary to keep the facilities-and […]

MONROE COUNTY

August 18, 2008

MONROE COUNTY Bloomington gets a debate, but not the presidential one Indiana University in Bloomington failed to land the presidential debate it hoped for, but it will host a gubernatorial debate between incumbent Republican Gov. Mitch Daniels, Democratic challenger Jill Long Thompson and Libertarian Andy Horning. The debate is slated for Oct. 14 at the […]

IUPUI faces tough decisions over aging sports facilities

August 18, 2008

From 1979 to 1982, IUPUI inherited three world-class athletic facilities that have since hosted Olympic trials and world-record performances by top-flight amateur and professional athletes. But that inheritance has turned into a financial albatross around the university’s neck. It’s grappling with how to pay for their upkeep and the improvements necessary to keep the facilities–and the city–in the hunt for high-profile sporting events.

Obama picks Biden, passes over Bayh

August 23, 2008

Barack Obama named Sen. Joe Biden of Delaware as his vice presidential running mate early Saturday, passing over Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh, who was informed yesterday that he was not the pick. The selection of Biden balances Obama’s ticket with a seasoned congressional veteran well-versed in foreign policy and defense issues. Obama announced the pick […]

No-bid contract lets local firm suggest sales or sale-leasebacks of city property

The Mayor’s Office has quietly agreed to consider selling some of the city’s more than 1,100 properties, including police stations, maintenance buildings and parks, in a bid to raise cash to help balance the budget. The city awarded the potentially lucrative no-bid contract to Venture Real Estate Services, a politically connected real estate firm led by John Bales.

Flood swamps Columbus furniture firm

August 27, 2008

Record flooding on June 7 has claimed a downtown Columbus furniture and interior business. Montage Furniture & Design will close after 16 years in business, The Republic newspaper of Columbus reported. More than $100,000 of merchandise was lost when flood waters hit a Montage warehouse. Montage, owned by Trent and Cinde Wirth, will close in […]

This morning Ballard announced new leadership for both Indianapolis Economic Development Inc. and the Indianapolis Private Industry Council. Scott Miller, the former president of business landscaping firm Mainscape Inc., replaces Jeb […]

Commentary

September 1, 2008

Commentary Summer mega-events consume us Just when I thought I could start getting to bed at a decent hour again after the 2008 Olympics were over, up pops the Democratic National Convention from Denver. I’m not a television watcher. About the only things I find worthwhile on the boob tube are sports, PBS, movies, and arts or cultural programs. The occasional exception might include a cooking show. Like many Americans, I found myself watching the Beijing games late into the…

Commentary: Summer mega-events consume us

September 1, 2008

Just when I thought I could start getting to bed at a decent hour again after the 2008 Olympics were over, up pops the Democratic National Convention from Denver. I’m not a television watcher. About the only things I find worthwhile on the boob tube are sports, PBS, movies, and arts or cultural programs. The occasional exception might include a cooking show. Like many Americans, I found myself watching the Beijing games late into the night for most of two…

Sarah Palin’s influence on Indiana
