$1.7M invested in failed firm not authorized, sources say

September 25, 2006

Trade groups that host the Indianapolis Auto Show and represent 600 car dealers in the Legislature stand to lose $1.7 million they loaned to a local debt-collection agency–loans that sources said were made without the knowledge of the groups’ boards or membership.

ECONOMIC ANALYSIS: It’s time to get realistic about the federal deficit

September 25, 2006

Most of us know that the dollar figures used to describe the national economy are awfully large. That includes the dollar totals that pertain to the operations of the federal government as well. We’re a big country, with a population nearly 300 million strong. We have the world’s largest economy, and, yes, the world’s largest government. And every newly elected congressman or congresswoman soon gets comfortable tossing around multibillion-dollar spending commitments as if they were salt and pepper shakers at…

Company offers recipe for waste disposal: Sanitec plans to microwave local medical refuse

November 13, 2006

A Washington, D.C., company hopes to introduce a method of cooking medical waste with microwaves to the Indianapolis market, which now trucks much of that refuse out of state for safe disposal. Sanitec Industries Inc. has filed plans with the city to install one of its wasteprocessing systems in an empty west-side building. It plans to hire as many as 20 people at the facility to process the redbagged medical waste that flows regularly out of hospitals, and doctor or…

To the victors go the things they spoiled THERE OUGHT TO BE A LAW Ron Gifford:

November 13, 2006

I know self-government can be a messy thing. I’m well aware of Winston Churchill’s statement that “democracy is the worst form of government except all the others that have been tried.” But why is it that every time I voted Nov. 7, I felt like I needed another shower? (What? You don’t vote early and often?) Well, the bad news is that the next campaign cycle began Nov. 8. The good news is that it doesn’t have to be Groundhog…

BRIAN WILLIAMS Commentary: Indy is ready (and waiting) for rapid transit

November 13, 2006

A new survey demonstrates yet again that community leaders recognize it is time to fix traffic congestion, improve air quality, reduce aggregate fuel use and enhance area accessibility. The study was taken last summer of 377 members of the Lacy Leadership Association, a group of local opinion leaders, by Walker Information, a local market research firm. More than 90 percent of survey respondents indicated that rapid transit is an important component of the solution to these problems. In addition, respondents…

Speedway’s windfall leads to speculation: Questions arise about possible new hotel, turn-two suite upgrades and acquisition of adjacent land

November 13, 2006

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s announcement this month that it would sell its stake in Chicagoland Speedway for $69 million has racing industry experts wondering if the famed Brickyard is planning an expansion. “There are a number of things [IMS President] Tony George could use that money for,” said Dennis McAlpine, a New York-based financial analyst covering motorsports and entertainment. “That’s not to say he’s hurting for cash, but I believe he has projects on his plate.” IMS and Daytona Beach,…

Techpoint’s new leader sees room to grow: Indiana making progress, but could do better, he says

November 13, 2006

Techpoint, a locally based technology trade group that represents the interests of about 330 members statewide, is undergoing a transition in leadership. Jim Jay, 37, has been named interim CEO following the resignation of Cameron Carter, who has led the organization since 2003. Directors should begin a formal search for a permanent replacement the first of the year. Whether Jay lands the top job remains to be seen. But in the meantime, the Butler University graduate with an entrepreneurial spirit…

Proposed highway could ease congestion, but transit backers say it won’t

November 20, 2006

A 2005 study for the state says an outer highway loop-like the one Gov. Mitch Daniels proposed Nov. 9-would reduce traffic northeast of the city, potentially splashing cold water on a rapid transit plan. But supporters aren’t backing down.

State’s venture capital incentive seldom used

November 27, 2006

Since the inception of the state’s Venture Capital Investment Tax Credit in late 2003, investors have claimed only about one-third of the $37.5 million in credits available, according to an IBJ analysis of the program.

EYE ON THE PIE: Indiana: a primer for the Legislature

November 27, 2006

The General Assembly is organizing itself. This is more difficult than getting fleas to join a union. But I am being disrespectful. My purpose this week is benign. I present for the consideration of our 150 legislators certain facts about Indiana and where it ranks nationally. The data are from the 2005 American Community Survey conducted by the U.S. Bureau of the Census. First, let’s consider sex. Of the 6.1 million Hoosiers, 50.9 percent are females, which leaves 49.1 percent…

SMALL BUSINESS PROFILE MILESTONE ADVISORS: CFOs for hire: Company fills financial gaps Consultants provide expertise small businesses may be lacking

November 27, 2006

They’ve been using it to help other businesses shore up their financial foundations ever since. Milestone Advisors provides financial management, strategic planning and related services to small to medium-size businesses with…

Techpoint explores tapping bank fund: Bankers oppose altering management of $308 million

December 4, 2006

High-tech leaders eager for money for venture capital investments have set their sights on a new potential source: Indiana’s $308 million Public Deposit Insurance Fund. It’s an idea sure to draw adamant opposition. Take Indiana Bankers Association CEO Jim Cousins’ reaction: “Over my dead body,” he said. “That fund exists to insure deposits. Any deviation from that, we will fight like banshees to oppose.” Formed in 1937, in the wake of the Great Depression, the PDIF insures deposits of public…

Bipartisan control will force compromises: With campaigns over, legislators get down to business on new budget, property-tax relief and other issues

December 4, 2006

In his 2007 legislative preview for the Indiana Chamber of Commerce, State Rep. Brian Bosma, R-Indianapolis, opened with a joke: After a politician’s death, he found himself standing before the pearly gates. St. Peter offered the politician a choice of heaven or hell, prefaced by a brief preview of each. During his visit to hell, the politician was surprised to discover all his friends there. What’s more, it was a terrific place to be-the most fun and raucous party he’d…

Courting continues between Clarian, Morgan: Both sides look to build on months-old agreement

December 18, 2006

A working relationship Clarian Health Partners started in March with Morgan Hospital & Medical Center might evolve into something much bigger in the new year. Representatives of both systems say they want to strengthen their regional development agreement, and they count an acquisition of the county-owned hospital by Clarian-the largest hospital system in the state-as one of many possibilities they might examine. “I think both sides have considered a number of options from clinical affiliations to consolidation,” Clarian spokesman Jon…

EYE ON THE PIE: It is time to accept I-69 and move on

December 25, 2006

I don’t want to write this column; you don’t want to read it. Yet, I must respond to the diehards who insist that building Interstate 69 (and almost any other road) will be detrimental to our state. Several economic and environmental studies support the Bloomington-Crane-Washington-Petersburg route to Evansville. Yet, time after time, supporters of the Terre Haute-Sullivan-Vincennes-Princeton route rise up and demand a reconsideration of the path. The Terre Haute crowd is afraid it will lose something if the Bloomington…

SPORTS: Here are two opportunities to help our city’s kids

December 25, 2006

Almost a year ago, IBJ asked me to write a column that placed sports in an educational context. Obviously, I have great passion for the topic, having spent my life writing about sports, those who play the games, and the lessons that can be learned through participation. Sure, there are plentiful examples of excesses, and we certainly just had another in New York’s Madison Square Garden. But I maintain those incidents are not reflective of sports as a whole, any…

Amenities stripped from Johnson County development

January 4, 2007

Neighbors of a proposed subdivision in northwestern Johnson County complained so fiercely that developer Paul Shoopman now plans to meet zoning requirements precisely—and take the project downscale. Shoopman’s Indiana Land Development Corp. is stripping parks and walking trails as well as businesses, apartments and town homes, according to the Daily Journal of Franklin. House density will […]

Father-son team caters to wealthy clientele: Goelzer a local fixture in portfolio management

January 8, 2007

Reeling in 45-inch northern pike during annual fishing excursions to the upper regions of Canada is one type of bonding experience Don and Greg Goelzer cherish. But the camaraderie the father and son share really is rooted in the 25 years they have spent working side by side at Goelzer Investment Management Inc., the downtown advisory firm Don founded in 1969. In the quarter-century since son Greg arrived fresh from college, the two have helped grow the firm’s client base…

Suburban builder J. Greg Allen to tackle downtown

January 15, 2007

J. Greg Allen & Associates has made a name for itself building suburban subdivisions, office buildings and retail complexes.
Now, the developer is poised to tackle a pair of projects downtown.

Buyout boom isn’t all bad for Hoosiers

January 29, 2007

Announcements that major Indiana companies have been acquired are traditionally met with trepidation. But a rash of recent
buyouts of Indiana companies shows they’re not always bad news.
