As board chair for Fairbanks Treatment and Recovery Center, a local, nonprofit organization serving Hoosiers and their families, I closely follow any and all addiction news. I read with great interest your article about the number of private addiction centers entering the market [Addiction centers pop up all over, July 26].

We welcome new centers supporting individuals in recovery and want to reinforce the importance of evidence-based care and seeking care from centers that use research to treat addictions. Research can be used to provide significant outcomes on the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions. We encourage those seeking help to look for providers that require advanced academic training and clinical supervision of therapists and the mandate of evidence-based practices.

Many of these new providers are for-profit startups attracted primarily by the increased demand in recovery services. I am proud to serve an organization such as Fairbanks who has a trusted history of care, with 75 years of serving the recovery community here in Indiana. It is our greatest hope that Hoosiers get the right treatment at the right time and at the right place. There is hope. Recovery is possible.

John P. Ryan,
Fairbanks chairman of the board
