Compromise on lobbying, ethics legislation likely

It appears likely that a compromise will be struck in the Indiana General Assembly on bills to tighten ethics and lobbying
rules.

The House and Senate each passed bills on the issue, and the Senate Rules Committee will take up the House
bill on Monday.

The bill would prohibit lawmakers from becoming lobbyists for one year after their terms expire,
regardless of whether they complete the term. It also would require lobbyists to report gifts worth $50 or more, including
meals, drinks and tickets to events. The current threshold is $100.

The Senate bill has similar provisions, and
legislative leaders say they’re confident that any differences in the bills can be worked out.
