Purdue board OKs merit pay, bonuses, premium hike

Some Purdue University employees will get pay raises and bonuses, but all of them will pay higher health insurance premiums.

The Journal & Courier in Lafayette reports the Purdue Board of Trustees unanimously approved the compensation plan and premium increases of 3 to 9 percent Friday.

The 1.5 percent, merit-based pay increases and bonuses totaling $1 million would start Dec. 1. All Purdue employees are eligible except President France Cordova, Provost Tim Sands and Executive Vice President Al Diaz. The three voluntarily removed themselves from consideration.

The last general pay increase Purdue gave was a 3 percent raise in July 2008, but Sands said the school spent more than $1 million over 15 months to keep key faculty.

Cordova said she worried key staff members would consider leaving, too.
