John Reed told the Medora Community School Board that it could save $50,000 by hiring a part-time superintendent or possibly $123,000 if it could get by without a superintendent.
The Seymour Tribune reports the board voted Monday to accept Reed's resignation. He became the district's superintendent in 2008.
Reed told the board that the district of about 260 students won't be getting any increases in state funding over the next two years and that teachers have taken a 5 percent pay cut.
Board members said they appreciated Reed's decision and that they had talked with some people about being a part-time superintendent.
