Letter: Thanks to Walorski

For years, small business owners have been asking Congress to help make health insurance more affordable for their employees and their families. At no time has this been more important than today, when small businesses need affordable coverage to keep themselves and their employees protected in the face of this COVID-19 pandemic.

Before the coronavirus crisis began, Indiana’s representatives in Congress, especially Congresswoman Jackie Walorski, showed they were listening to small businesses by pushing for the repeal of the health insurance tax, or HIT. For years, this tax raised the cost of small business health insurance premiums by thousands of dollars a year. Until last year, when Republicans and Democrats worked together and repealed the HIT tax.

The repeal of the HIT tax was a win for local businesses and their employees. Congresswoman Walorski deserves credit for pushing to get rid of this burdensome tax and working to make health care more affordable for small businesses.

As this crisis continues, many Indiana small businesses continue to suffer from keeping their doors closed. Our return to a healthy economy will be contingent on a healthy workforce. Republicans and Democrats in Congress should again work together to ensure that health care coverage is accessible and affordable for small businesses and their employees.
