On April 27, John Russell’s article, “With ban lifted, Indiana hospitals gear up to resume elective procedures,” outlined how important it is for patients to seek treatment, both for the patient and the health care system’s bottom line. At Hancock Health, we believe the key to unlocking patients’ reluctance to seek treatment lies in implementing a robust safety plan.

Regardless of the reason, be it screenings, lab tests, elective procedures, or wellness visits, our health care system will use a combination of virtual and in-person protocols to protect both our patients and our physicians and staff. Our waiting rooms will remain closed for the next 90 days. If they come to see a doctor, patients will wait in their cars until they can be met and directed where to go. We also are instituting a virtual updating system to keep visitors apprised of their loved ones’ care. If hospitalization is required, we will provide the same e-visitation options we have now for COVID-19 patients.

Most importantly, we will primarily test for COVID-19 at an independently located testing center, keeping patients seeking traditional services fully separated from anyone suspected of having the coronavirus.

Whether you are seeking care in Hancock County or not, it is important to call ahead and find out what safety measures are in place. Seek reassurance first and then see your physician.
