There is nothing wrong with spending your “entertainment” budget on things you enjoy; being unnecessarily “thrifty” in every aspect of life is simply impoverishing oneself for the sake of someone else’s idea of “financial discipline”.
.
The lady with the convertible understands this. It is the same for folks who like to entertain in their homes: the extra payment is worth it. Some people don’t wait until retirement to travel extensively. People who do these things might be described as “working to live as well as they can afford”, making choices for a well-rounded life instead of a maximum retirement that they might or might not live long enough to enjoy in good health.
.
Bottom line: as long as one lives within one’s means, insures properly against risk, and saves for retirement, their expense allocation won’t always fit a planner’s formula or her idea of what’s appropriate.
