Indiana saw COVID-19 cases, deaths jump significantly in October

The Indiana State Department of Health on Sunday reported 2,787 new COVID-19 cases, the lowest number of new reported cases  in the department’s daily report since Wednesday. New cases had exceeded 3,000 in three previous three days and have topped topped 2,000 for 11 straight days.

The department said the seven-day moving average for cases reached an all-time high of 2,804.

Cumulative numbers show an increase of 60,932 COVID-19 cases in the state from Oct. 1 to Nov. 1. That’s more than double the number reported in any previous month of the pandemic.

Hospitalizations due to COVID-19 ticked down to 1,732 on Saturday after reaching 1,740 on Friday. Friday’s number was the highest mark since April 13, when COVID hospitalizations reached an all-time high of 1,799.

The state reported 28 new deaths due to COVID-19, bringing Indiana’s total to 4,124. Newly reported deaths have been in double digits 25 times over the past 27 days.

Cumulative numbers show an increase of 706 reported COVID-19 deaths in the state from Oct. 1 to Nov. 1, more than double the increase in the previous month. October’s death count was the highest in any month since May.

The department reported the testing of 11,433 more unique individuals, bringing the total in that category to 1,709,944.

Cumulative numbers show an increase of 322,213 tested individuals in the state from Oct. 1 to Nov. 1, slightly more than in September but fewer than in August.

The state’s seven-day positivity rate for unique individuals jumped from 15.1% on Saturday to 15.6% on Sunday.
