The Indiana State Department of Health on Monday reported 5,700 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the statewide cumulative total of cases to 387,278 during the pandemic.

New cases have exceeded 5,000 in 25 of the past 27 daily reports.

Both cases and testing numbers were at their lowest point since Dec. 1.

The department also reported 42 new deaths from COVID-19, the eighth day in a row with more than 30 reported deaths.

The state has reported 531 new deaths over the past seven days, an average of nearly 79 per day. That’s up from 354 the previous week, an average of almost 51 per day.

Statewide hospitalizations due to COVID-19 rose from 3,189 on Saturday to 3,214 on Sunday, ending a five-day streak of declines. Hospitalizations hit an all-time high of 3,460 a week ago.

Testing of new individuals rose by 14,745, the 41st straight day that testing in that category has exceeded 10,000.

The 7-day positivity rate for unique individuals has risen to 27.2%.

COVID-19 patients occupy 43.6% of the state’s intensive care beds. The state said 22.1% of its ICU beds are still available.

  1. FWIW, that’s 3 days in a row where the positivity rate is 38% for new individuals tested. That’s better than last week when it was over 40%. It’s an incremental improvement, but still an improvement. Cross your fingers for the Tuesday-Friday results (which usually have much larger numbers, as a rule).

    1. We have yet to see the surge due to the lapses of judgement over the Thanksgiving holiday. I guarantee you, the positivity rate will go up in the next week ..

    2. jennifer s., so we are back to victim blaming? Next stop, witch trials? Hopefully we skip past relying on the settled-science of eugenics, at least.
