Indiana sees another 125 COVID-19 deaths, 6,283 more cases

The Indiana State Department of Health on Wednesday reported 6,283 new COVID-19 cases, the highest daily total since Saturday’s report. New cases have exceeded 4,000 in 42 straight daily reports.

The state reported 125 more deaths due to COVID-19, the third-highest number of new deaths ever contained in the daily report. Indiana has reported 578 COVID-19 deaths over the past seven days, an average of 82.6 per day. That’s up from 520 the previous week, or 520 per day.

Marion County saw another 964 more COVID-19 cases and 18 more deaths, bring cumulative totals to 60,483 cases and 1,006 deaths.

Statewide hospitalizations due to COVID-19 dipped from 3,229 on Monday to 3,192 on Tuesday. The high was 3,460 set on Nov. 30.

Hospitals are nearing capacity in intensive care units throughout the state. COVID-19 patients occupy 39.9% of the state’s intensive care beds and non-COVID patients are taking up 48.9%, leaving only 11.2% available.

The department said it tested 15,471 new individuals, the 50th straight day that testing in that category has exceeded 10,000.

The 7-day positivity rate for unique individuals remained at 24.5%.

In its weekly update of long-term-care facility COVID-19 counts,the department said there were 1,400 new cases and 265 more deaths among residents over the week ended Dec. 9, bringing resident totals during the pandemic to 17,519 cases and 3,547 deaths. There have been 11,292 cumulative staff cases and 15 staff deaths.

    1. Good observation — saw the same thing. It’s actually been in the mid-upper 40s for the last month, so I thought the drop below 40% was a very positive sign. Ventilator use is also down a bit for Covid patients.
