COVID-19 cases surge back above 6,000 in Indiana

The Indiana State Department of Health on Thursday reported 6,543 new COVID-19 cases, the highest number of cases since Dec. 20.

Reported cases have been on the rise for four straight days after dropping significantly over the Christmas holiday weekend.

The department also reported 99 more deaths due to COVID-19, bringing the cumulative total to 7,911. Indiana has reported 373 total deaths in the last three reports, an average of 124 per day. Deaths have exceeded 25 in the report for 29 straight days.

The department said 14,272 new individuals were tested, the first time testing in that category exceeded 10,000 people since Dec. 26.

Statewide hospitalizations due to COVID-19 dropped from 2,941 on Tuesday to 2,842 on Wednesday. The high mark was 3,460 set on Nov. 30.

COVID-19 patients occupy 29.8% of the state’s intensive care beds.

The 7-day positivity rate for unique individuals is 23.7%.

*New cases, deaths and tests are previously unreported cases, deaths and tests submitted to the Indiana State Health Department in the 24 hours through 11:59 p.m. the previous day. The cases and testing categories typically contain numerous duplicates—as many as 20% or more—that are later eliminated from the cumulative totals.
