The zoo said Wednesday that the parking fees it collected on Super Bowl Sunday and the days leading up to the game have been sent to the Tarangire Elephant Project. That conservation program is based in Tanzania, which is home to Africa's second-largest elephant population.
Tarangire Elephant Project director Charles Foley says the zoo's gift will allow his staff to immediately start a new collaring project to help researchers track elephants as they enter and exit Tarangire National Park along Africa's east coast. That's crucial to linking elephant populations in eastern Tanzania with those in the west. He says the project also will help reduce poaching.
